Why Use Transitions?

• They connect sentences and paragraphs, improving the flow of your writing.
• They help readers follow your argument or story.
• SEO tools (like Yoast) require a certain percentage of sentences to include transitions for better readability.

How It Works

• Paste or type your text in the form.
• Choose the transition type to check: Basic, Advanced (Yoast), or Two-part.
• Click Check Transitions to see your text with transitions highlighted and view useful stats.

Types of Transitions & Example Sentences

• Basic transition:
  “The test was difficult, but I managed to finish on time.”
• Advanced transition:
  “However, the weather changed quickly and the picnic was cancelled.”
• Two-part transition:
  “Not only did she bake a cake, but also she prepared tea for everyone.”

Interpreting Your Results

• Aim for at least 30% of your sentences to contain a transition for longer texts (Yoast’s green-light threshold).
• Each type of transition is highlighted in a different colour—see the legend below your results.
• If your text falls below the recommended percentage, add more linking words or phrases.

Best Practices

• Use a variety of transitions to avoid repetition.
• Transitions can appear anywhere in a sentence, not just at the start.
• Two-part transitions (e.g. “not only … but also”, “either … or”) must appear together in the same sentence to count.
• For very short texts (under 200 words), a lower percentage may still be acceptable.

Tip

If you see lots of unhighlighted sentences, try reworking your text with more transitions. Check the highlighted output to avoid overusing the same ones.
